The Women of the Tea Party
By Bill Miller
Once again, the Bubble-heads had it wrong. Once again,
listen, the Tea Party is guided by the conscience of the individual. Many of
our leaders, particularly at the local level are women.
We dislike the Republican machine and party only less
slightly then the Democratic one.
In desperation to change the South Carolina narrative, that
only a few days ago was defined by Karl Rove
(Republican strategist) as this, "The winner of South Carolina is the
eventual party nominee." Rove said, when it was apparent that Newt
Gingrich was going to win, "This is a ticket to go on in the
process."
A perhaps a more honest analysis from Joe Trippi, Democratic Strategist, who has no skin in the game,
reminded viewers that Sarah Palin requested the un decided vote for Gingrich and
keep the campaign going. Rove said nothing in reply, after his and the party
hacks attempted to marginalize Palin for past two years. It appears she really
has more power and foresight then they do.
An amused Palin queried, "Are you beltway pundits
really this surprised or are you just feigning it?"
Charles Krauthammer and Juan Williams both had to eat crow.
Once again, the biggest problem Mitt Romney has is not his
poor debate performance on releasing his taxes, or the idea he’s out of touch
with the little guy, or his tenure as governor or his so called "flip
flops." He, like Newt Gingrich and
Rick Santorum, are not that different on the fundamental planks of
conservatism. The biggest impediment that Mitt Romney has is he’s the Republican machine’s guy.
I have spoken to many Tea Party leaders whose distrust of
the Republican machine is so much that they would "risk" Ron Paul’s
foreign policy, even though they don’t favor it, rather than just allow the
machine to hand pick Romney. Plus, any of the four remaining candidates will be
far superior to Obama domestically
We all accept the fact that Romney will turn the economy
around. It is his strong suite, but what
about dismantling the EPA, the Departments of Energy and Education? What about
rolling back the "Great Society," let alone reigning in or
eliminating the Federal Reserve. There is a nagging fear that Romney would not
commit to doing any of these things. The Republican machine, after all, has
never done any of these things and is actually responsible for half of them.
But, conservatives have never wanted any of these government
expansions. This is the ground where conservatives and Republican split.
Ed Rollins (The National Campaign Director for the
Reagan–Bush ‘84 campaign) said this morning, when questioned on a statement he
had already made.
"The Republican establishment will go to war with
Newt Gingrich."
"There has been a long history there and he’s never
been the establishment candidate . . which may be a good thing in this environment . . ."
"Every elected official from governors to members of
congress . . . every big money guy. . . most of them. . . who has a
vested interest in Romney are going to do everything they can to stop him. . .
I’m not sure they can at this point of time. Conservatives are looking for an
alternative, it’s now Newt."
As for the conservative base Rollins continued, "They
now think he can beat Obama and that is what they want."
Reminded that conventional wisdom says Gingrich will
implode, Rollins said he is not sure that it is Romney that may not implode.
"Newt Gingrich is now the front runner of our party . . now you gotta
take him out . . . I don’t think Romney can do that."
Gingrich got 7 out of 10 self-described Tea Party adherents.
The surprise to the pundits was his strong showing with women.
Guess what, the Tea Party movement has a plurality of women
leaders from national leaders like Amy Kremer and Jenny Beth Martin to local
leaders in every state of the union. I have met and worked with many of them.
We often talk of the Founding Fathers, but let us not forget
there were Founding Mothers also. Indeed, the very Conscience of the Revolution
was Mercy Otis Warren. She was an early patriot leader that helped our cause
throughout the revolution: Not only with her eloquent pen, but in direct
advisory rolls to Washington and Adams. After the war, she was just as
important an anti-Federalist leader as Patrick Henry or George Mason. Remember
it was the Anti-Federalists who insisted on the first ten amendments, the Bill
of Rights, the only device which is keeping the intrusive central government in
Washington from morphing from a soft to hard tyranny.
Thank God for the women’s conscience.
