Joe Stack: Texas Kamikaze-Anarchist
|
| Joe Stack: Texas Kamikaze-Anarchist
Editorial by Jeff Bruzzo
Who was this nut-job, Joe Stack? What do you accomplish with an act of kamikaze?
Rantings of a madman hey? His was a cool-headed formulation of a letter. Make no doubt about it; this guy wasn’t dumb… it was a premeditated act of homicide murder, no different than the Islamic flea bags aching to meet Satan by blowing themselves up, under the guise gaining of 50+ virgins and a first keg of beer, or so it goes. As for being a terrorist, Stack would be labeled a complete waste: Real terrorists want an on-going campaign, not a one time deal.
Granted the IRS is a leach upon our society, but acts of violence like this have no place in achieving the goal of abolishing it. We have a code of laws to deal with mistakes like the IRS or Federal Reserve, it's called the Constitution! Pushing the "reset" button doesn't have to be by the barrel of a gun or through acts of violence, but through peaceably changing the laws back to original Constitutional mandates.
You want Change??? Vote the socialist bums in office out and replace them with Constitionalists who answer to the people, not self-interest and special interests!
What’s next? I’m sure the Tea parties, Ron Paul, and even George W. Bush will be held to blame by brainless Obamanuts on the far left. Blame the individual and not a single thing more… this man took it upon himself to do this. Besides, He appears to be more of an anarchist, who by the way, align themselves as an extreme leftist leaning fringe!
Eat that Daily Kos!

I'm Glad he failed!
|
| It's the first positive thing he's done for us yet.
By Jeff Bruzzo
Given my penchant for saving the taxpayers a buck, I look to putting money to good use with a return on investment. Holy smoke Mr. Obama! You really did it! Since he has taken office, the American people can effectively say that he has not done one single positive thing for this nation and its taxpayers. That was until He and our "Dear Lady" decided to jet off to Europe on a billion dollar sales pitch, which would have been the envy of Billy Mays, with a 1.5 million dollar shipping & handling fee, courteous of the U.S.taxpayer aboard Air Force One!
The President has actually been able to save taxpayers money and fail at the same time. It's bad enough a sitting President has to gravel up to our European neighbors to beg for an Olympic venue, let alone in Chicago... You don't suppose there is anything wrong with that? He failed. Maybe because people around the world are waking up to this empty suit and ego to finally say no. He failed at the expense of the U.S. taxpayers for 1.5 million dollars and you ask how he has saved us money. Let me explain.
We all know that Chicago would have been the venue of corruption for the Olympics, which would have made Al Capone turn over in his grave. Given Obama's tendency to surround himself with crooks and progressive communists, I can just imagine my worst nightmare scenario unfolding with billions of dollars of our money disappearing down the black hole of cronyism and favorite deals! It is no accounting trick to show how this venture would have put the American taxpayer on the hook for some 3 billion dollars. You see, the scheme would need to revamp an entire city to make it Olympian in stature. We're talking billions in infrastructure, to include a new stadium to fit the Olympic rules of 80,000 people. Tens of millions in added security and police protection! How would this ever pay for itself? The City of Chicago is practically bankrupt, like so many other big U.S. cities, and could ill afford to foot this bill. Entire the knight in shining armor... our "Dear Leader!
For some reason I smell stimulus to the rescue. I can just imagine all those jobs being created to fundamentally transform Chicago into a Utopian socialist paradise. Never mind the federal money (ours) which would be parsed out to help line the pockets of the likes of Tony Resko. Never mind the fact those jobs are temporary to say the least! Never mind it would be cheaper for us to keep them on unemployment! It's all about Chicago ! That great Obama Mecca where it all started, the kitchen politics of Bill Ayers, and the unabashed Reverend Wright.
But Obama failed. Yes he did! It has probably saved us billions for a mere outlay of 1.5 million dollars. While I somehow feel sorry for the real losers in this... the hardworking people of Chicago, another part of me says to bad, at the expense of my grandchildren you won't!
Just maybe this has put the brakes on this megalomaniac for just one moment. He seems to keep coming back for more.

Open Letter to GEICO...support Glenn Beck! by Jeff Bruzzo
|
Open letter to GEICO
Dear GEICO Management,
I am writing to find out when you are going to be reinstating your advertising with the Glenn Beck Show. I know you were advertising on Glenn Beck’s show and I know you were frightened into pulling your ads because of a campaign by Color of Change and DailyKos. We are by far a much larger group than the extremists. We actually work for a living--we have a family of 4, with purchasing power over tons of consumer products & services, as the boycotters are mainly unemployed college kids and bloggers.
I want to continue to support your company, but if you continue to pull your advertising from Glenn Beck, my family will boycott you. I have begun to assess my account with GEICO and am currently seeking competitor pricing as an alternative. Please respond in a timely manner with your reply.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey T. Bruzzo (current GEICO customer)

Former NY Lt. Governor, Dr. Betsy McCaughey, has read the bill.
Yet it seems the common person on the street is stymied to so much as a thread of the truth as to what is inside the healthcare reform bill, now lurking in Congress to be passed - like a thief in the night!
What is it that Obama and Emanuel are trying to avoid? What is it that the Progressive socialists, hiding under the guise of liberals, don't want you to know? I, as "The man on the street", will always strive to find the truth. That's all we want - the truth!
Somehow, along the way, the truth has become irrelevant. The very people we elected to do our government business have distorted the truth in order to install a socialist regime. A regime hell bent on control. Sound familiar? While this is just one issue confronting an ever awakening American public, there are multiples to go around. It is now that the American people need to wake up and read the alternative news... those of us who have sacrificed much to get the truth out. While the mainstream media is in the tank with the Emperor Obama, there are new outlets surfacing which strive to give you the truth. If it is the truth you want, then turn off your TV for now and hit the net!
I have always been there when the truth is sought, and will always lend an answer to the doubt which Obama generates. You want answers? Think outside the box , which has sought to enslave you, open your eyes to what is contra to what the mainstream media has shown you. It's that simple. Moguls like Glenn Beck have given glimpses of what can be done as a solution... he's not alone! Does anybody even remember the self plan by Dr. Muney? Can anyone say "tort reform"? Did it ever occur to take government out of healthcare? While I have been designated "Man on the street", a media term for a reporter or cameraman, I prefer to be called "Man on a mission!"
It is refreshing to see influential people, such as Betsy McCaughey, stand up for the truth. She should be commended and supported. While her issue is healthcare, there are more issues being forced down our throats faster than a burger at the local stand! Obama and his progressives have used an election to generate a supposed consensus based upon outright lies and deception. A consensus not so cohesive anymore. Stand up and be heard before history repeats itself.
"History is the sum of the things that could have been avoided"
I wonder how many of us even know who Konrad Adenauer was? Or why I even mentioned his quote in our latest video? Do your homework.

Stand up and stop this madness Amerca - He must fail! by Jeff Bruzzo
|
Stand up and stop this madness America! He must fail!
Given the penchant for opening my big mouth, I will go out on the limb once again. He Must Fail!
The more Americans are reading into the arcane socialistic schemes embedded into the myriads of pages thrust upon an already disfunctionate Congress, the more they are awakening: Awakening to the fact this guy must go. I have had people tell me everywhere... "I am so sorry I voted for Obama" ... they would have voted for Ron Paul instead! These are your "blue-dog" Dems at the voting level. I believe there are more of them than the ultra moon-beam, Al Gore-George Soros-boot-licking, Kool-Aid socialists! He would have never been elected except for the teleprompter and the promise of never having to work again under his care. Are some people really that naive??? Thanks to some members of Congress who are exposing these catastrophe laden hidden clauses, we are finally seeing why he is so pressured to ram these bills through. It's all about control!
I am reaching out to all those democrats who have been awakened. Everything about Obama is as evil as the puppet masters pulling his strings. The American people number 300 million... to just a handful of them! join us.
So why must he fail? Why have so many others, such as Rush Limbaugh, said likewise?
Simple... to preserve the Constitution in its written form. To preserve common sense. To keep from becoming a socialist UN subjugate!
If it means preserving what is remaining of our American way of life, then by all means I want his agenda to fail.
If you get the chance to read what is embedded in these bills, you might be reminded of Orwell's 1984. Yes, it is just that scary! This is just a commentary on the issue at large, so I must again point you to parts of this website or others for more details, as I am only speaking my mind. With the might of your voices and the ballot, YOU can make him fail, starting in the 2010 elections!
What have you got to lose-- Your freedom and maybe even your life.

Oppose Government Healthcare
|
by Pat Udalovas
Oppose Government Healthcare
Let’s examine what the president said. One, it will cost less: No you can’t insure more people for less money. Two, you won’t get the red pill, you may get the yellow pill, which makes you sick and causes nausea: But it’s only you and yours, right? He and all of Congress have excellent health care: This is just for the rest of us peons. What Congress doesn’t realize is that they have children and grandchildren and other loved ones that will be affected by their outrageous decisions. Our young medical professionals will choose to go into a different field of study, because they will lose their ability to make a good life, studying hard and making health care strides. I, personally, was saved by a heart stent at 58 years old, and so was my brother. It seems we have a genetic disposition. I had an excellent doctor who wanted to help me. This doctor and others won’t be there for my children and grandchildren.
Consequently, they will be rationing the tests we can receive and the medicine we can take. A bureaucrat will tell you what tests you can take and your medical history will not be private any longer. Is this what you want for your family? We have the finest doctors and the best concerned health care professionals in the world, with a right to privacy. Why, when we are the best in the world, would we strive to be inferior? Anyone who walks into our hospitals, in need of assistance, is treated, whether or not they have insurance. If this president and Congress want to do something for the American People, they should get fraud out medicine and stop unjust medical malpractice law suits by putting caps on settlements. Make those who file bogus law suits liable for attorney expenses and damages. Make all insurance companies covering malpractice fight against those law suits. A few won by the doctors will help stop the madness.
But, before we can get the corruption out of medicine, we must get the corruption out of government. If this president and Congress are so hell bent on socializing our medicine, then they themselves must have the same plan as we will. What made these people better than you or I? Remember, all men are created equal. What ever happened to personal responsibility? I have raised five children and could only afford insurance to cover catastrophe, that insurance would only cover broken bones and unexpected illness. Anyone who wishes to can get this insurance.
The President says you will have a choice, but that’s a deliberate lie. Once employers, who are already strapped with high taxes and government regulations, realize there is a government health plan, they will stop providing health care for their employees. This administration is counting on that. In yet another and most powerful way initiating government control over our lives. We are a free country and We Americans take responsibility for our own lives. We will not accept government control. My message to the President and Congress is abide by our Constitution… read it… embrace it. You are there to protect and defend the American way of life, not dismantle it. We the people will vote you out if you don’t. We will defend our country and our way of life.

Cap & Tax... The Trillion Dollar Home Invasion!
|
Cap & Tax… The Trillion Dollar Home Invasion!
Back at it folks! Since this is now reaching lots of you in the USA, Canada, & Great Britain, allow me to speak freely. Please!
I have given this topic some thought, then some more thought, and…. after a run in with some Senatorial knuckleheads... have decided to piece it all together for you in typical Jeff Bruzzo fashion. Lock your doors! It’s not just the local street thugs coming to take your belongings, it’s the Feds!
I will not bore you with the facts on this one... I leave that to others. I am always eager to share information by posting links and adding videos. My job is to comment. I comment on a situation, event, issue, etc. What I see before me in this Cap & Trade clown act is tantamount to the greatest heist ever perpetrated upon the American people. I leave out the word “taxpaying” because it will effect all of us, even those on Obama’s dole! If you think this is so “energizing”, so “captivating”, so "the way to the future", remember the story of Damacles … for the sword of Damacles hangs above your head!
If the knuckleheads in Congress pass, or should I say “ram” this bill onto the American people, then it will be the final straw in an economic collapse which I have been mentioning for some time. Forget the depression we are in ( yes, it’s a depression), or the 12+ trillion dollars of national debt we currently owe (2+ trillion to the Chinese), forget about creating jobs (not that any have really been created under the current scheme), forget about the whole petrodollar scam, forget about Wallstreet’s floorless recovery (there’s nothing under it… LOOK!), forget about it!
It’s all about the “loaf of bread”.
As a long time friend of mine was quoted as saying “The American people won’t do anything as long as they have food on their tables… bread on their tables”. He immigrated from Germany years ago to start a life here in America. He has been a successful business owner, living the American dream. I guess he was influenced by what he learned from his parents as they grew up in post-war Germany. That quote is haunting me at night as I open my eyes wider in the glow of this Cap & Tax scam… and it hurts. Have we grown so complacent in this country that a bunch of Chicago street thugs can con their way into our homes? Some people call them commies, socialists, progressives, I agree. If Congress passes this legislation, we will need to start worrying about that loaf of bread. It hurts because we have elected a Congressional majority to go along with these Chicago thugs!
While it may not hit you on the head immediately, it will come. It will start with the runaway inflation promised by so many, like Peter Schiff. Spurred on by runaway deficits and money printing, made worse by a devastated American working class which will no longer be able to pay the taxes (envisioned by these crooks as complacent), because they won’t have any jobs to pay taxes with! I guess that leaves it up to the “rich” Americans… there’s not enough gold in Fort Knox to even come close to paying for this, let alone in private safes! That leaves the dollar, right? Wrong! Remember one thing… dollars aren’t worth the paper they are printed on in an inflationary super cycle.
Back to the loaf of bread hey? The farmers won’t be able to supply you. Every aspect of this economy will be turned upside down if Cap & Tax is passed! It will be the biggest transfer of wealth out of the American middle class since the petrodollar scam began. This is economic suicide… what are they thinking? Please… oppose this bill! Call, right, e-mail, protest, get involved with local groups…. Do something before the last loaf leaves the shelf!

The Audacity of Arrogance! by Jeff Bruzzo
|
The Audacity of Arrogance!

As many of you have noticed, I have begun to bring my camera on scene to film events as they are. I have become my own reporter!
I am generally a freelance blogger & commentator, but also a member of several groups born out of the Tea Parties from months ago. I believe it is my duty to show and explain events as they are, in the most simplest form... It is from these unabridged moments that some of the best videos are captured. From that point I can blog & comment on what I see!
When I decided to film on location with CSA (Conservative Society for America) July 17th, it was out of one of those "filmable" moments (to borrow an educators phrase "teachable moment"), that I was able to be on scene when members of CSA were presenting their declaration from Senator Schumer's constituents. We were originally allowed to have 12 people.. including 2 cameramen... come up to the office. I'm sorry, but I seem to have something about politicians flip-flopping on issues and promises... it's just me I guess! Well, why should Chuck Schumer's people be any different than their boss?
How quickly 12 turns into 2! Eventually we made our way to the office, only to find they would let just 2 enter to present the petition. What about filming the event??? What is the big deal about having a camera guy there to record the event???
I will comment on it like this... and hear me loud and clear!
There is a media bias when it comes to this current government. Where was the mainstream media they were invited? ABC, CBS, NBC, Channel 12.
I believe they don't want this movement to get out over the air. They are afraid of the no-longer-silent majority actually getting wind of what they are up to!
Let me see.. isn't Chuck Schumer one of those progressive liberals who despises what doesn't fit into his agenda? Why should his people be any different.
But, oh the arrogance of these despots! Senator Schumer! ...I hold YOU responsible for the actions of your office personnel.
How dare you slam the door on your constituents, whom were allowed to be there. How dare you demand I shut off my camera. How dare you slam the door on a WWll veteran and others... to include me! This is despicable treatment of your tax paying & voting constituents!
This video is out and so will you be come next election!
Good luck,
Jeff Bruzzo

Letterman Should Go! by Jeff Bruzzo
|
Over the line... and out with you!
Letterman should go!
Late Night TV Host David Letterman Should Go!.
The comments made by Letterman were over the line and despicable. How can he by any stretch of the imagination make sexual jokes about anybodys' daughter.
Oh! I forgot... it's Sarah Palin. According to the liberal chart of rules its ok. This coming from the party of rainbow freaks and deviates who state they are just "expressing" themselves.
So Letterman offers up a glass-half-empty apolgy and a spot on a future show for the Palins'. Good for you Sarah and Todd for turning him down!
I could only imagine if a conservative ripped jokes about Letterman's wife and family. You wouldn't hear the end of it for years. Need not worry! Double standards do apply!
It's over the line for a conservative to mock someone in like fashion... let alone mock the president, whom the liberals believe was sent to us by God. This is the party who believes in letting terrorists have Miranda rights, put them in a circus court, then give them voting rights (with the help of ACORN of course). Way to go Dave! Coming from the party whose members defile churches with lewd acts, yours wasn't to far off.
Hey Dave... I hate to tell you... you really let your freak flag fly!
Then again, your to be pittied. Your pathetic and rancid diatribes against Palin's daughter(s) only work to strengthen the moral awakening of this country. The day is coming when the people will put an end to this sick and perverted ideology you adhere to. We will do it in a moral and ethical way, as you will not hear this kind of sanctimonious trash coming from our mouthes. We will vote you out of office, boycott you into retirement, shame you into irrelevance, whatever it takes! As a Christian, I do remember my pastor telling me to "hate the sin, but love the sinner". I forgive you Dave!
The Palins' will go on. They will continue to put fear into the liberal mindset and I hope Sarah will run for office in the near future. The girls will grow up remembering these days! Liberals better hope they don't run for office one day... hum?
For now? Dave, you need to step down and resign! For once in your life, do something respectable, turn the tide in your life... face it... you will never fill Leno's shoes!

Way to go Navy SEALS!
Capt Phillips' rescue is a proud day for this country.
What makes him an American hero? He sacrificed himself to set his crew free.
He attempted escape not once, but twice.
To the Navy SEALS... you too are our heroes! Hooyah!!!

To the next group of terrorist pirates... read the bottom of this flag flying on all US Navy ships...if you can't read English, we put the snake there so you get the message!

Same Sex Marriage – The New Separate but Equal
|
Same Sex Marriage –
The New Separate but Equal
Dan Cambra
Congratulations on your marriage! Oh wait – you’re gay. I’m sorry but We don’t recognize you. I appreciate the fact your state offers you all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of a “traditional” marriage, but you’re gay. You’re different. You’re separate, but we’ll consider you equal.
“Separate but equal” is chapter in American history that exemplified the horrors of honest Americans who have asked nothing from their country except for the right to have equal opportunities for success and equal protections under the law. Black Americans had ever y right to rage against the government and cultural machine that oppressed them. Not for any special rights, but for access to the inalienable rights embodied within the US Constitution.
But the sins of America, when vanquished by the oppressed, manifest themselves like the cancers they are. Separate but equal has found a new cultural target – married gay America. Five states, plus the District of Columbia recognize same-sex marriage and 10 states recognize same-sex civil unions. Putting aside the personal argument of whether or not you agree with the concept same-sex marriage, it is the application of law that is creating a new dichotomy. In “traditional” marriages, a husband can enroll his wife (or vice versa) on his health insurance. No questions are asked. No penalties are incurred. However, for same-sex couples, the federal government says, “We don’t recognize you. You are separate, but equal.”
Nowhere in the constitution does it state that the federal government has a right to interfere with or regulate marriage. However, since it has been deemed an institution that promotes American values as well as family and economic stability, the government has created an environment that promotes it, going so far as to offer legal protections. Once the government has created laws protecting a specific group of individuals, it must be extended to all parties, else the laws be deemed unconstitutional. By denying same-sex partners the same legal and financial protections under the law, they have effectively created a two-tier, two class system – a concept completely alien to the intentions of the founding fathers.
And the effects of this new two class system are crushing. Using myself as the example, I married my partner of 12 years. It was the most joyous and blessed day of my life. My family, my colleagues and friends all celebrated our union. It brought me great pride to privately submit my paperwork to my employer to change my status on personnel paperwork. Two weeks later, once the information was processed, I was given my gift from the federal government – a tax increase of almost $400 a month. Since my partner is on my health insurance, the portion my employer pays is now considered taxable income. Like many Americans, I am struggling to pay my mortgage and my personal debts. Unlike some, I am not willing to walk away from my responsibilities. My debts are mine and it is my responsibility to pay them. However, when I incurred this new tax burden, I came within a few short months of declaring bankruptcy and losing my home.
My American dream, my New England work ethic, my belief that so long as I work hard and live an honest life that I will be left alone to live my life as best I can, all started to fall apart. I was thrown into a civil rights issue I had no desire to be part of. As a conservative, I wish to live my life as best I can without the interference of the government. I never asked for attention, nor do I want it. But when the federal government makes the declarative statement that I am a second class citizen, not even guaranteed the same rights as those who actively abuse it – I am left with no other option than to rage.
Equal rights are not special rights, regardless of the group fighting to achieve them. America is a great experiment. As with all experiments, we theorize, conduct trials, review results and makes changes when necessary. We are so beautifully flawed as a people and a nation. It is the flaws within us though that propels us forward to create “a more perfect union.” Only time will reveal the fate of my plight. But I am patient. I have been given my gifts from God and my parents. While I may shrug, I will never be brought low. “I, too, am America.”

We The People Means All of Us
|
"We The People" Means All of Us
Over the course of the past few weeks, with hectic filming and so much going on, I couldn't help but notice one small thing. There is a growing number of Democrats who have finally had enough with the party: The Democratic party, that is. It seems the party which promised equality for all, has lost a wheel in the debate, along the way. It has been hijacked by a brand of liberals who call themselves Progressives. In their own book, they have as much as explained why they prefer to be coined "Progressive", because if you knew who they really were, you would bolt!
The progressives are nothing more than a slimy band of socialists, communists, and eugenisists, with the ultimate goal of dominating your life to the fullest. Yeh, that's you! The "new" Democratic party wants equality for all of course, but what they really mean is equal suffering and equal domination over your life. In short, the Progressives want the total enslavement of our society.
Don't believe me of course, just look around. Every book ever written by Obama, Pelosi, Ayers, Alinsky, and every other wannabe loud mouth Professor and politician, has spelled it out in no vague terms. This group of radicals, or hijackers, as I like to refer to them, in no small way has managed to undo 200 years of Constitutional Democracy in just under 40 years... all right under our noses!
I just hope and pray the tide is turning away from them. The more people read, watch, & listen to what is going on around them, the less chance these despots will have in succeeding. The more "We The People" know of our Constitution, the more you will see just how far off course the "USS America" is. It should come as no surprise that many Democrats are now waking up to this tyrannical nightmare at hand and changing course. The pide piper of righteousness and reason is finally playing loud and clear!
In that sense, I embrace every American who comes forward to take a stand against this looming oppression. As my Christain upbringing says for me to do... Hate the sin, but pray for the sinner. If you're still trapped in the world of free milk & cookies, economic deceit, and the lie that other people's money won't run out, please read every article that you can get your hands on, the Constitution, the Bible, what ever! The truth is at your door. You just need to open it.

Obama Pay Per rally nuts Whimper
|
ACORN Pay Per Rally Obamanuts Whimper
Say what?
While I was covering another rally against the socialist agenda of the minuscule left, I couldn't help but notice the handful of Obamanuts who tried to infiltrate the event. This seems to me, to be nothing more than a token gesture by a corrupt regime to upstage a movement, which is gaining steam. It not only tells me who has the upper hand, but who is the loser. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice the Obamanuts were out numbered almost 12:1... yes I was counting! This doesn't take into account the puny despots who have taken over Washington only account for a mere dot on a page when their views are concerned. America... you are being heard! America.. you are standing up! America... you surround them by an outstanding number! Do not be frightened by the loud mouths who would have you whimper at your TV. For as the truth is concerned, I have once again proven my point with fact... they are the ones who whimper!
I can understand a balanced debate and protest, (though it was hardly that), but there is one thing which sticks out to me? ACORN! ...or whatever they call you... where were your American flags? How come you only show up with some smeared on signs proclaiming a healthcare bill, or propaganda flyers, which you cannot explain yourselves? Keep showing your true nature. It just proves my point of bringing out the truth, which is shown in numbers. Numbers don't lie like the regime which has brainwashed you. If you want the truth, let's talk tort reform and reigning in the insurance moguls.
It seems the left can't handle the truth!
Keep your eye on the politicians who are standing up and doing the right thing!. Remember, talk the talk, but walk the walk. These are the people we want to replace the inept cronies unfortunately in place right now. On to the elections of 2010! Let's do this the right way... vote the idiots out and replace them with true Patriots. Just take a look at the line of people joinig for the forst time who really do care... again the truth! Where was the line for Mr. Obama?
Yours in freedom,
Jeff Bruzzo

Ben Stein's Last Column by (Open)
|
For many years Ben Stein has written a biweekly column called 'Monday Night At Morton's.' (Morton's is a famous chain of Steakhouses known to be frequented by movie stars and famous people from around the globe..) Now, Ben is terminating the column to move on to other things in his life.Reading his final column is worth a few minutes of your time.
Ben Stein's Last Column..
How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today's World?
As I begin to write this, I 'slug' it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is 'eonlineFINAL,' and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even recall when I started. I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end.
It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as a person and the world's change have overtaken it. On a small scale, Morton's, while better than ever, no longer attracts as many stars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves and definitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, and we had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendid talk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendor in the Grass was a super movie. But Morton's is not the star galaxy it once was, though it probably will be again.
Beyond that, a bigger change has happened. I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.
How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives in insane luxury really be a star in today's world, if by a 'star' we mean someone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model? Real stars are not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches or getting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while they have Vietnamese girls do their nails.
They can be interesting, nice people, but they are not heroes to me any longer. A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit , Iraq . He could have been met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets. Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world.
A real star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to a road north of Baghdad . He approached it, and the bomb went off and killed him.
A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day, is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with a piece of unexploded ordinance on a street near where he was guarding a station. He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as it exploded.. He left a family desolate in California and a little girl alive in Baghdad.
The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even after two of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered and stripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists.
We put couples with incomes of $100 million a year on the covers of our magazines. The noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.
I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poor values, and I do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending that who is eating at Morton's is a big subject.
There are plenty of other stars in the American firmament...the policemen and women who go off on patrol in South Central and have no idea if they will return alive; the orderlies and paramedics who bring in people who have been in terrible accidents and prepare them for surgery; the teachers and nurses who throw their whole spirits into caring for autistic children; the kind men and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards.
Think of each and every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World Trade Center as the towers began to collapse. Now you have my idea of a real hero.
I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters. This is my highest and best use as a human. I can put it another way. Years ago, I realized I could never be as great an actor as Olivier or as good a comic as Steve Martin...or Martin Mull or Fred Willard--or as good an economist as Samuelson or Friedman or as good a writer as Fitzgerald. Or even remotely close to any of them.
But I could be a devoted father to my son, husband to my wife and, above all, a good son to the parents who had done so much for me. This came to be my main task in life. I did it moderately well with my son, pretty well with my wife and well indeed with my parents (with my sister's help). I cared for and paid attention to them in their declining years. I stayed with my father as he got sick, went into extremis and then into a coma and then entered immortality with my sister and me reading him the Psalms.
This was the only point at which my life touched the lives of the soldiers in Iraq or the firefighters in New York . I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to help others He has placed in my path. This is my highest and best use as a human.
Faith is not believing that God can. It is knowing that God will.
